artist inspiration

He is the father of modern photojournalism. He developed candid or "street" photography which is hugely popular today. He also helped form Magnum Photos a co-op of photographers.

"To take a photograph is to hold one’s breath when all faculties converge in a face of fleeing reality. It is at that moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy."

I love his portraits the most. The one below is of a young Truman Capote.

This is probably his most popular image.

Grey Gardens

The 2009 HBO movie based off of the 1975 documentary. They are the relatives of Jackie O. whose trust fund has run out and lives have spiraled downwards, almost without their notice. An intimate portrait of a mother and daughter.

William Eggleston

The photographer responsible for brining color photography into the fine art world. He was a documentarian of ordinary life. He was born in Memphis and loves to capture the south with a sharp eye for color and juxtaposition.

I saw a collection of his work at the Frist last year in Nashville. It was amazing to see so many of his prints in one place.

I also distinctly remember watching a documentary about him in photo class. There is one scene when they are walking in an alley and he stops to take a photograph of a dumpster.

He is by far one of my favorite photographers and would of been to hard to select a few photographs, so I picked a lot.
